Audrey Hepburn is another of my (and let’s face it, just about everyone’s) favourite style icons. She was petite, and feminine – even in boyish clothes, but above all, she was so very charming and cool. I haven’t met one woman in my life who hasn’t wanted to be Audrey Hepburn at some point.
Her look is entirely enduring, never going out of style even after all these years – and also endearing.
Here are a few items that you can get for your wardrobe that wouldn’t look out of place on Audrey Hepburn. Of course, nobody can learn what it was that really made her style so special – her enchanting character and personality.
The Belted Midi Skirt
A belted midi skirt can transform the most gamine of girls into the most feminine of ladies – and this is what it did for Hepburn. Teamed with a simple roll sleeve shirt, tucked into the skirt, with the belt nipping around her tiny waist (although I have to say, you don’t need a tiny waist to look good in this outfit). The flared nature of the skirt emphasises your hips, without putting too much focus on your derriere. The outfit is therefore smart, pretty, and great for any occasion, whether wondering around the shops, visiting parents, or even taking the dog for a walk (particularly if you have noticed a hunky dog walker going out at a similar time to you).
The Stripey Top
Another of Audrey’s classic items of clothing was the stripey top. This has long been a favourite, and will never stop being a classic. Originally a look pioneered by Chanel, the look is traditionally French and perfect for a day time, casual look.
All In Black
One outfit that immediately makes us think of Audrey Hepburn is the black polo neck, cropped black trousers, and black loafers. Audrey made this look so chic, although in reality, this can look a bit too masculine on some people.
It would be a crime not to mention the long black dress made famous by Breakfast at Tiffanys. Of course, this wasn’t Audrey’s choice of outfit, but we all associate the dress with her. It is such an iconic look.
In the shoe department, our mind would immediately wander to the ballet flats when we think of Audrey Hepburn. This is an easy style to replicate at the moment, as ballet flats are back, and they are everywhere. Take the selection in Office Shoes, or in Moda in Pelle.
The Trench Coat
An obvious finale for the get the Audrey Hepburn look guide is the basic trench coat. It doesn’t need to be beige, but go for a pastel colour if you want to achieve the Hepburn-esque style. This timeless classic is fairly easy to come by, but it is all about the fit. Don’t just buy without trying – make sure you get a trench coat that is perfectly tailored to your body shape. This means ensuring the shoulders fit perfectly, and making it the right length for your body shape.
